Thurs 20 Apr -2° Chiusa to Fussen, Germany
Sunshine and short sleeves for skipper even with the chilly Temps. Paid to leave €16.50 for motorhome, €8pp plus tax €34.80....Worth it for limitless showers and hairdryer in a heated shower block..
As we left straight into a tunnel 237m then another 782m....bit further on a tunnel with a vineyard growing on top of it at 288m. Couple more tunnels as we gently climb towards the Brenner Pass into Austria. Thank goodness for all these tunnels thru the mountains, easy, good surfaces on roads. Past motorhomes coming this way as we climb now it starts to snow softly..then thicker and the cloud shrouds the snow capped mountains ahead.
We stopped at Brenner for fresh bread and got some large plate size, very thin sausage that seemed to be very popular. We asked the man in front in a Caravan about the Vignette, he said if not going on autobahn don't need it just pay the toll for the Brenner Pass toll road. Several Motorhomes pass, Germans going home after their Easter break, so can't be too bad up ahead. This was forecast so not a surprise and nice and warm in Bessie and the roads are clear so all good.
Snowy lunch stop, very tasty roll and thin sausage, then on to get a diesel fill at €1.20 €52 for 43 ltrs. Sunshine and snow stopped, beautifully painted houses in Austria and we can tell we have left Italy as the road surfaces are better already.
Very green now with no sign of snow, good shot of the massive viaduct toll road overhead, enormous feat of engineering, Tony quite dissapointed we opted for the scenic route.
We bypass the sprawling city of Innesbrook then decided to forego plan A and B in Austria and go straight to Fussen. Tony now really pleased we took this road, he is loving the winter wonderland scenic drive, even stopped for a little play....
Lovely sunshine and such a pretty drive all the way on good roads, a real pleasure. Pretty village in a green valley under a snowy mountain, the Fernstein Castle, Nassereith overlooking a lake.
Climbing again through a winter wonderland of trees dusted in soft powder snow, so,pretty, as soft fluffy flakes begin to fall....3 seasons in 1 day.
Spectacular snowy scenery, lots of lorries, cars and motorhomes both ways as we descend and into our longest tunnel of 3.4km through the mountain, Lermoos Fernpass, then a tunnel 1.3km into Fussen, Germany.
Arrived at our site for the night €3 car park, under cover, with Snow capped mountains, sun shining and still warm, so got the chairs out and had a 5 o'clock wine in the sun and snow, quite surreal. Made a snowman face and just sat and enjoyed the sun, Tony said it was an unforgettable day and the drive from Chiusa to Fussen was an absolute highlight in our adventure.
Hot vegetables soup with the Italian bread and thin sausage meat for dinner, sun still shining at 7.30! Surprised there is any snow left.....but expect a cold overnight temp.
