Wed 19 April 5° brrrrr Gargazzone to Chiusa, Isarco Valley

Very cold but sunny, back out with winter woolies and socks. We are heading to a cold snap in Germany, we made the most of the site and the sun to trim Tony's beard, but boy that is a cold wind, not at all nice after our teaser of sunshine and warm Temps in Garda.

Filled up with gpl at .60 ltr took nearly 17 ltrs €10 the attendant checked our tyres, all good, checked all fluid levels and topped up windscreen washer, which was good for Tony to see as there is a funnel extension in the windscreen wash water container ,  all set, service with a smile at the 6 legged dog.

Drove back to Bolzano for plan A, B and C...all sites full, so after a frustrating drive around the city had to go for plan D.....no the roads are too twisted and hairpin bends....plan E.  A family run campsite at Chiusa or Klausen in German.

More tunnels and more, must save a lot of winding mountain roads,  tremendous engineering, with viaducts overhead for the toll road and all those tunnels, cut out of or into thick rocky hillsides.

A very pretty drive with fresh green trees along a rocky river one side and the huge viaduct toll road overhead all screened by the trees and purple Irish in bloom. Past steep terraced vineyards and all the while convoys of huge lorries stream along the toll road from North to south.

The Monestry di Sabbiona and the Saben Convent perched on the hill came into view.

Our campsite appears and there on the hill above are the very same buildings,  couldn't believe our luck, this is a real bonus,  all services, immaculate heated shower and toilet block. Very happy after our not so good morning.

After a well earned cuppa and lunch, we strolled into the old town, got a map from the I site and set off, a really quaint, pretty town with colourful houses and shops.

We walked up many stone steps to the ruin on the hill and at the top would you believe it was a vineyard.

Got a good view of the viaduct toll road with all the lorries on, and our campsite under it but hidden by the trees, if you look hard you may just make out a couple of motorhomes .

The Dolomites are in the background with a dusting of snow on top ,  we found a working water mill in one of the narrow cobbled streets and a town square with lots of fresh green trees.

This town is full of, chapels, churches, Monestry and Convent that is still inhabited by nuns so the cloisters are not open to the public but the chapel and 3 churches can be visited in the Monestry. There are a total of 15 religious buildings dating back to the 12th century in this town.
After 1200 AD a Bishop established a house to offer travellers accommodation and care, and named it the Hospital Church, to provide Hospitality,  it is thought that 'hospitality' arose from here.

More motorhomes were in when we got back to camp, a hot cuppa and a sort of cream bun that we purchased in a little bakery in the town , different sort of vanilla filling rather than cream, but so fresh it was yummy....

Beef Chiusa  with vegetable medley  and fresh pasta for dinner  la skipper   👌
