Very special day in Spain when everyone celebrates their dead loved ones and take flowers to their graveside and talk to them as if they are still here. Mass is said several times a day for the celebrations.
Mike and Sonia left 9.30pm going west along north coast then down to Portugal as well, may see them further down.
Got ready for our day out, met John a Brit mountain biker who travels from Bristol several months of the year, also going north coast then down to Faro, leaving motorhome and flying back for Xmas £15.....excellent price. Good chat about the El Capricho de Gaudi, very interesting, he is travelling with his wife and in convoy with 2 friends, they got an English speaking tour of the building. John said he thought the weather was packing up in Galicia and would be -° in the Picos mountains, so they may change their route down.
Continued our walk to town and to the hidden gem, no English tours today but were given a good map to show us around. Very good value at €5 each. First we watched a video with English sub titles which was in the central greenhouse. The main building was built around it with some rooms having inward facing wrought iron balconies so you could sit and admire the building. Gaudi loved music and nature which is depicted in the sunflower ceramics and stained glass windows showing a bird on a piano.
His love of the wrought iron came from is father who was a blacksmith and used a lot of it in his designs. His furniture was beautifully carved from wood, with no fabrics to appreciate the natural timbers.
The garden was designed in a horse shoe shape and there is a bronze statue of Gaudi looking up admiring his magnificent tower.
We had a late lunch in a local Taverna €10 each, Tony had Tripe, but it was not how he remembered it in white sauce with onions, this was in oily tomato sauce with meat and not to his liking. I had stuffed peppers in pasta in a tasty tomato sauce, both with lots of bread.
We continued our walk through town, bought a fresh Panasonic, bread, and some sliced meat, then climbed up to the Cemetery watched over by an angle statue. Each grave and crematorium plaque was adorned with fresh flowers, all beautifully maintained.
Then we walked over to the next hill to the Monument Al Marque's de Comillas, which depicts a ship in dry dock with half the keel suspended in mid air. The first marquis is carved in the mast head and whole structure has sea creatures carved all over.
It is now 22°......at last warmth.....went to a seafront tavern and 2 cool beers and got a free liqueur which is Spanish custom after a meal....but we didn't expect it having just had a beer, so a very nice surprise.
Great day, lite bites for tea after our lunch, fresh Pan (bread) cold meat, olives and fried slices of aubergine with garlic and tomato .
