Wed 19 July 15° Kirkcudbright to Ullswater, Lake District
Good morning sunshine, not the best of our stops quite noisy and smelly , but served the purpose . Called into town to betting shop Tony wanted to put a £ on Ryan Fox in the golf open 200 :1....shop is no longer a betting shop, nearest one is Castle Douglas got there and bet made so fingers crossed.
Very gusty winds today as we drive past green rolling hills with a mix of fences, stone walls and hedgerows. Smooth roads....ahhhhhhhh. Very good light system that flash when trucks are crossing.
Gretna Green, very understated, but it really did deliver, it was very well done, lovely little place, we'll not so little really, museum attached to the old blacksmiths, where the couples would go to get married, still happiness today. A wedding was about to commence as we were wandering through the many rooms, each with the blacksmith anvil to cater for many weddings that they still perform up to 6 a day. Had our photo taken and Tony asked and I said I do, sealed with a kiss. Lovely unexpected lunch stop today. They even have a lovely maze of 2 circles that join at a bridge so you are then entwined together aahhhhhhhh. Very well done.
Large gift shop that apparently keeps expanding there is so much in there you could spend a fortune, so extricated Asian tourists must have bought a dozen tartan scarves and prices of clothing...great souvenirs. Cafe, food hall and a gift shop that you can send items abroad.
Short trip into Scotland this time, back in September, but for now we head south to the Lake District past the last pub in Scotland and the first house in England.
Lots of roundabouts and most of the way the roads are so far, so good.
Plan A lake Basssenthwaite was too small for us, so drove on to Plan B, Ullswater Nat Trust car park opposite the lake, lovely spot but absolutely thick with midges.
Italian herb chicken, orange kumera and courgettes for dinner with our bottle of Chardonnay from Chardonnay in France.
